A warm, sunlit February day brings a hint of what will come as the weather gets warmer in this Manson, Washington orchard. Soon these and 10,000 acres of orchards in Chelan County will be green. By the summer the branches will be heavy with fruit. For now, they are sparse and quiet; optimistic. While not all of the orchards produce apples, they are by far the most common in the region. In Washington over 4 billion pounds of apples are harvested each year from the 175,000 acres of orchards.
