June 29, 2013 - Another Ferry Picture

The ferry M/V Kittitas approaches the Mukilteo ferry landing as the M/V Cathlamet approaches the Clinton ferry dock on Whidbey Island 2 1/2 miles away.  While you wait for your ferry you can kill some time watching the divers and fishermen or grab a bite to eat.  You can check out the views of the Olympic Mountains, the boaters on Puget Sound or the Mukilteo Light, built in 1907.  You can even catch the reflection of your ride in the windows of the nearby condominiums. Now that it is summer you'll have plenty of time to take in the sights as you wait for your ferry!

June 28, 2013 - Good Morning, Sunshine!

Mount Rainier has yet to shed its blanket of lenticular clouds as a sun dawns over Seattle.  With nothing but sunshine forecast for the next week it will be the last blanket Washington's tallest peak sees for several days.  While officially named Mount Rainier in 1890, this volcano, the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states, was originally called Tacoma by  the native American tribe that lived in its shadow.

(Below) As the city awakes the M/V Tacoma heads past Alki Point headed to Vashon Island already on the second of what will be eleven round trips today.

June 25, 2013 - Damp Duck Dodge

On an evening so wet that even the ducks stayed out of the water, the nautical Seattle summer tradition of  Tuesday evening sailboat racing on Lake Union went on. Tonight's theme: Pirates!

From the August 17, 2010 post: "The Tuesday evening Duck Dodge is a summer tradition on Lake Union that began in the mid 70s. Dozens of boats “race” on a course for two hours, then proceed to converge for a themed party. The rules are pretty simple: Don’t make a duck change its course and don’t run into other boats. The winners get a duck decal for their mast.

The original handbill from that first summer in 1974, when the race was called the “Lake Union Beer Can Regatta or Tenas Chuck Duck Dodge”, proclaims that any skipper, any sailboat, any crew can participate and that same fun spirit survives. Every race has a theme – prom, Mardi Gras, pirates, pajamas – and every week there is a different host Committee Boat."

June 22, 2013 - Super Buick Super

Given the amount of adoration the owner of this 1940 classic has demonstrated, a house of worship seems an appropriate background.  The hubcap and driver's door are pristine mirrors of Bellingham's southside classic - the Sacred Heart church, built in 1913.

The 1940 Buick Series Super 50 was first introduced in 1940 and featured a cutting edge "torpedo" body style and the 248 cubic inch Fireball I8 V8 engine.  Over 125,000 vehicles were sold in the first year.  While production was interrupted during WWII, the vehicle remained in production until replaced by the Buick Electra in 1959.

June 14, 2013 - Object of their Attention

The Washington State Ferry M/V Kittitas is the focus of more than one camera at the Mukilteo ferry dock on this pleasant June evening.

And while the  sunset, seascape or ferries catch the attention of many, this fishing duo seems to be pretty focused on one another.

June 13, 2013 - Camp Staff Stuff

Summer camp stuff - staff shoes, walkie talkies and camp shirts!

In a rite of the season, repeated at thousands of camps around the country, dozens of young adults come together as summer camp staff to learn a summers' worth of fun songs, camp traditions, programs, activities and safety procedures in a span of days before camp starts.

At Camp River Ranch, a Girl Scout camp outside of Carnation, several dozen staffers are working hard learning to work together and on all of the myriad of details that go into making camp special.  The hundreds of area girls that will be attending this camp are currently counting down their final days of school.  In a few days they will begin  arriving and the waters of Lake Langlois won't be as quiet and still.  And the magic will begin!

June 8, 2013 - Eyes for Chocolate

The candles can't get lit fast enough, nor the song sang fast enough for this (almost) nine year old chocolate fiend!  Happy birthday, Sophie!
