June 21, 2016 - Hama Hama Legacy

Most schools in Washington are either out, or soon will be out.  That means that camps and lodges, such as this one at at Camp Robbinswold on Hood Canal, will soon be full of kids enjoying time at camp.  Camp Robbinswold is owned and operated by the Girl Scouts of Western Washington.  It is located outside of a spot on a map called "Lilliwaup".  The Girl Scouts claim they have been "doubling the population of Lilliwaup since 1928" with their annual influx of camp staff and campers.

The waterfront property of Camp Robbinswold is prime real estate.  Most of this land was donated to the organization by the Hama Hama Logging Company in the 1920s.  Their generosity has allowed thousands and thousands of Girl Scouts to enjoy camp at an extremely unique setting.  Canoeing, sea kayaking and sailing   The lodge itself was built by the Clise Family in 1939.

June 13, 2013 - Camp Staff Stuff

 

Summer camp stuff - staff shoes, walkie talkies and camp shirts!

In a rite of the season, repeated at thousands of camps around the country, dozens of young adults come together as summer camp staff to learn a summers' worth of fun songs, camp traditions, programs, activities and safety procedures in a span of days before camp starts. 

At Camp River Ranch, a Girl Scout camp outside of Carnation, several dozen staffers are working hard learning to work together and on all of the myriad of details that go into making camp special.  The hundreds of area girls that will be attending this camp are currently counting down their final days of school.  In a few days they will begin  arriving and the waters of Lake Langlois won't be as quiet and still.  And the magic will begin!

March 19, 2011 - Lake Langlois' Last Winter Morning

At Lake Langlois, near Carnation, Washington, canoes sit idle at the boathouse on the last morning of this winter.  The canoes and the lake won't be still for long, however.  Lake Langlois is an integral part of Camp River Ranch, a Girl Scout camp operated by Girl Scouts of Western Washington.   Each year thousands of girls learn canoeing, go swimming, enjoy campfire songs and appreciate the beauty of the lake.

Lake Langlois covers nearly 100 acres and the clear, cool waters are nearly 100 feet deep.  In addition to the activities of the Girl Scouts the lake has a strong fishery.  Each year the lake is stocked with several thousand legal rainbow trout and kokanee.  No gasoline engines are permitted and public access is limited to a boat launch.
